PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Member

This month the NZ Thai Chamber and the Lighthouse Club are co-hosting a joint networking evening at Shenanigan’s Jomtien on Friday 22nd August.  This should be a great evening as we will have a mix of people from two quite different organizations getting together socially.  From our side we are also very grateful to Fisher & Paykel for sponsoring the event on behalf of the Chamber.

With the rapid development of the eastern seaboard visibly taking place and with the reduced travelling time to get there, increased numbers of businesses are establishing there.  This provides new opportunities for the Chamber to assist NZ companies and individuals focusing in this region, particularly with the recent changes to the Chamber of Commerce Act which does not now restrict our membership to the Bangkok region only, but from across Thailand.

Our second event this month is our usual Corporate Knight networking evening at the Sheraton.  Our sponsor for this event is the Crown Group, managed by fellow kiwi John Perry.  It is interesting to see this company also taking advantage of the growth in the ESB area by establishing an office there earlier this year.

Crown have been a long standing sponsor to the Chamber in several ways and on this occasion we are very grateful to them for providing van transport from Bangkok to the ESB function at Shenanigan’s on the 22nd.  Anyone who wishes to attend the function and requires transportation should contact Julie Littlejohn to organize a lift which will return to Bangkok later that evening after the function.

This month sees the end of our financial year and accordingly membership subscriptions will be sent out for the 2008/09 year in early September.  However we are also pleased to advise that at last month’s board meeting, the committee decided to retain membership fees at the same level of Baht 4,500 for the year.  We know that this will be well received by our members as we continue to improve on the benefits and services the Chamber provides.

We look forward to your company at both our networking functions this month.

Kind regards

Cris Dunning
President

Crown established operations in Thailand in 1992 offering a full range of moving and Relocation Management Services.

This year, 2008, Crown Thailand launched Crown Records Management, Crown Logistics and Crown Fine Arts as new business divisions alongside Crown Relocations. This expansion in Thailand moves Crown Thailand forward, in line with other operations in the group. To support business growth the Company moved to a new office facility in Bangkok, established a permanent presence and commitment along the Eastern Seaboard, and moved to a brand new state of the art warehouse facility at Bang Na Trat with modern fire protection system and security cameras. The company restructured internally and recruited additional staff to meet growing business demand and proudly launched a new fleet of trucks and vans to enhance the service experience to our clients.

THAILAND COMPUTER CRIME ACT
Were you aware that a new Computer Crime Act will start being enforced in Thailand as of 23 August 2008? The Act itself  was enacted last year but with a grace period of up to 1 year. That  grace period is now running out, and to assist members we  have loaded a paper into the Members area  of the web site (i.e. you will need to login to view it)  at www.nztcc.org. The paper  outlines the provisions of the  Act and indicates some of the implications for companies in Thailand.

NEW ZEALAND TECHNOLOGY WITH A THAI CONNECTION
NextWindow is a touch screen developer based in Auckland. They pioneered the use of a new optical technology in touch screens, using imaging sensors  and backlighting. Key benefits over the competing technologies include image clarity as it is not a film or coating, stylus independence so  you can use a finger, pen, brush etc and speed which means you can do annotation.
Originally making them for large displays they have
miniaturised down and recently won a large contract with HP. While the R&D is done in NZ they do manufacturing in Asia, including a factory near Chiang Mai. www.nextwindow.com
